The opposition to the extension of the tenure of the Chief John Odigie-Oyegun-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressive Congress (APC) continued yesterday in Edo State, as the party dismissed report of tenure elongation.

State Chairman of the party, Anselm Ojezua, at a press briefing in Benin City, yesterday said no decision was reached at the party’s NEC meeting extending the tenure of Odigie-Oyegun.

South-South leaders on Thursday hailed the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun. This commendation came after Bola Tinubu, national leader of the party accused him of sabotage. A statement by the Chairman of South- South Front (SSF), Chief John Harry commended Oyegun for giving worthy account of himself, advancing the interests of party members, resisting forces which are inconsistent with democratic principles and inculcating in APC supporters a sense of oneness. The statement reads, “Chief John Odigie-Oyegun is very democratic in his way of life. He is working hard to entrench internal democracy, the rule of law and respect for human dignity in the ruling party. “Men and women without appreciation for the contribution of Oyegun to the growth of the ruling party are content to criticize this honest politician without deep thought about his leadership style. “The anti-Oyegun protesters blundered when they decided to describe the national chairman as a big threat to Buhari’s second term agenda. “Most of Oyegun’s critics are poorly informed about the system of party government in Nigeria. “Let Oyegun be judged fairly. APC is better organized than the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Labour Party (LP) and others. “Even acknowledged authorities in the field of politics and government recognize the efforts of Odigie-Oyegun in the unity and progress of the ruling party. “In any political society, there must be conflict of views and clash of opinions on a large range of issues. APC is a key to the solution of the Nigerian problem. “The APC policy is the best suited for the political advancement of Nigeria. Chief Odigie-Oyegun is working vigorously for the success of the ruling party.” “The eyes of the world are on APC. Let us not quake or doubt about APC winning the 2019 general elections,” the leaders added.

He said only a motion was moved to extend the tenure of Odigie-Oyegun and others, but NEC was reminded about provisions of the party’s constitution.

Ojezua noted that there was the suspicion that NWC was working to get approval for their own tenure to be extended to enable them finish whatever tasked before them, but NEC insisted that what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

He said: “There must be a misconception as what decision the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the APC made. There was a motion put before NEC proposing the extension of tenure for a number of reasons, but our attention was also drawn to the constitution of the party that it does not contain any provision for extension of tenure and that should it be that there was extension, something has to be done to satisfy the constitutional provision.

“There was no decision to extend tenure. A motion was passed, indicating a preference that tenure be extended, but there was the realisation that the constitution does not permit it and therefore there needed to be a further action taken on it. No decision was taken to extend tenure of the executives.

“Time is still ticking. Very soon, the tenure of the executive will soon expire. The party will have to do something quickly to address the issue, because as it is currently constituted when the tenure expires, then it is dead.
